CARLISLE BULLETIN BOARD:
YOU Can Make a Difference!
It only takes one hour one day a week to significantly impact
a student’s life! Plano ISD’s TEAMS (Together
Everyone Achieves More Success) program provides mentors for
children in kindergarten through fifth grade who need help
with reading or math. If you enjoy children and would like
to help them succeed, this program is for you. Mentoring is
done during the child’s lunch hour. You begin by enjoying
lunch together, then read a book, or play an educational game.
This one-on-one experience can make the difference between
success and failure for these students. For more information,
call Tammy Stewart in the TEAMS office at 469-752-0661 at
Carlisle Elementary or email her at tammy.stewart@pisd.edu.
A NOTE FROM OUR PACE TEACHER:
MRS. MCALPIN
If you would like to
have your child tested for possible inclusion in the PACE
program, please request a referral packet from your child's
teacher or the PACE teacher, Anne McCalpin. Kindergarten packets
must be returned by 3:00 Friday, December 14. Students in
grades 1 through 5 must return their packets by 3:00 Friday,
February 29. If you have questions, please get in touch with
Mrs. McCalpin by email (Anne.McCalpin@pisd.edu) or by telephone

November, 2007
Dates to Remember
Book fair – Week of Nov. 26th
Dec. 14 – Early Release at 12:00
As the weather becomes cooler/colder, more and more students
will be bringing in sweaters, sweatshirts, coats, gloves,
and hats. Make sure to label all these items with your child’s
name. If any of these items are dropped in the hallway or
left out on the playground area it is much easier to return
it to your child if their clothes are labeled. If you find
that your child is missing some items there is a school wide
lost and found located in the hallway, by the cafeteria and
music room. You can come and look through the lost and found
to try and locate the missing items.
We have focused on the letters: M, T, F, H, N, A, E, B, O,
I and P. We will be working on: the “chunk” th,
G, L, D, C, S, and W in the weeks to come. We do varying activities
with each letter in our classroom as well as coyote centers.
We focus on the short vowel sounds as well as the long. We
are also discussing with the students what words begin and
end with these letters and what words can be made by using
these letters. We are working on story problems in math. Students
solve problems by using manipulatives or drawing pictures
to show their answers. We will be working on teen numbers
and writing numbers as well.
Students are continuing to learn and work on their writing
of words, sentences, and stories. Some students are working
on “saying their words slowly” to write out their
words phonetically. Others are writing down the beginning
sounds and/or ending sounds of words. Students who are ready
are beginning to write sentences and stories with a beginning,
middle, and end. Help your child at home by encouraging her/him
to write and journal at home. Remember that the correct spelling
of words is not as important as the meaning of what is being
written or the process.
The book fair is coming to Carlisle
the week of November 26-30th! Each class will have a day that
they can go to the book fair and purchase books. If you are
interested in having your child buy books or other items you
can send money on the day your child’s class goes. Each
class is listed below with the day they are scheduled to go
to the book fair.
McElligott – Nov. 26th
Look – Nov. 27th
Kearney – Nov. 28th
Dunkle – Nov. 29th
Happy Fall,
The Kindergarten Team

SENSATIONAL SECOND GRADE
The weather is turning colder! Please make sure your child
is bringing a jacket with their name inside it.
Second Grade
THIRD GRADE HAPPENINGS:
Here is what we will be learning in Third Grade during the
weeks of Nov. 19th and 26th.
Math
In math we are continuing our study of multiplication. The
focus this week is on identifying the relationship between
multiplication and division. We will work various types of
word problems where the student will need to decide whether
multiplication or division is needed to solve the problem.
This is a difficult concept for third graders, so your child
may need some extra guidance with Wednesday’s homework.
Reading
Students will be reading “Moses Goes to a Concert”.
This is a story about a deaf boy who goes to a concert and
learns about playing percussion instruments from a talented
deaf musician. Main idea, summarizing, and using context clues
are skills that will be highlighted. In language, we will
begin studying verbs. Spelling test returns on Friday! Students
will be writing persuasive papers with ideas and organization
as the highlighted traits. Letter writing will also be studied.
Integrated
We continue our investigations of simple machines. Students
will be traveling to other third grade classrooms to learn
about a particular simple machine. Our assessment on simple
machines is Tuesday, Dec. 4. Study guides will go home with
students on Tuesday, Nov. 27th. Be sure your child can give
an example of each simple machine!
Third Grade goes to lunch at 12:20.
Ice cream may be purchased at lunch on Wednesdays.
Reading logs will be due Friday, November 30.
Don’t forget to send in canned goods for our Food Drive!
Special points of interest:
Book Fair Schedule
Miss Speckman and Mrs. Schmidt will take their classes on
Monday, Nov. 26th.
Mrs. Jefferson -Tuesday, Nov. 27th
Mrs. Turner - Wednesday, Nov. 28th
Mrs. Lebeuf - Thursday, Nov. 29th.
FABULOUS FOURTH GRADE
We have a very busy week planned in fourth grade!
Our plan by the end of this week is
to be packed up and ready to move into the building! On Friday,
we are hoping that the classrooms are all up and running so
the children can pack their desks and be ready to move. Monday,
December 3rd, we will start our week in the new classrooms!
Yippee!!!
Math - We are continuing to review
multiplication and division, along with introducing capacity.
Ask your children to look around the kitchen and see what
containers of liquid you have. Question them if the containers
are measured in Metric or Customary units. As always, please
continue to review all math facts with your child.
Reading/LA – We will be reading
the exciting story, “The Hatmaker’s Sign.”
Our area of focus will be on judgments and decisions. There
will also be spelling this week, along with six new vocabulary
words. In Language Arts, we will continue writing and reviewing
the six traits, as well as looking at verb tenses. Please
encourage your children to bring home their writing binders
so you can see the fantastic work they are doing.
Integrated - Our lessons focus on Early
Texans and Native Americans. Your children will be creating
a booklet on the 4 regions of Texas, along with learning about
landforms and resources. Remember, there are some terrific
I Wonder ideas that your children could look into completing.
Science Fair booklets are being handed
out. If your child would like to participate in this, please
fill out the forms that were sent home and return them to
school. Remember all students must complete one project for
the fourth grade year!
The Food Drive continues….Let’s
get Fourth Grade up there in numbers of cans!
Book Fair is being held this week.
Please take a few minutes to visit with your child on their
day to attend.
As always, the fourth grade teachers
appreciate your support!
FANTASTIC FIFTH GRADE
Collin County Adventure Camp
Our trip to Collin County Adventure Camp is just around the
corner. If you have questions about camp, please contact your
child’s homeroom teacher or Mrs. Sullivan, our Camp
Director. All forms should have been turned in already. If
you have not done so and your child is going to camp, please
contact your student’s homeroom teacher.
Colonial Day—November 30
This coming Friday, our students will travel back. They will
be part of a Colonial schoolroom, learn about a colonist’s
life in a Colonial kitchen, try their hand at stitchery and
tin punching, as well as play a variety of games from that
era. This ties in perfectly with our study of colonization
in Integrated Curriculum. Mrs. Brown and many parent volunteers
have been preparing for this special day for our students.
Sons of the American Revolution Poster
Contest
Flyers were distributed to all students a few weeks for this
poster contest. The theme this year is Molly Pitcher. As well
as meeting the Fine Arts Requirement for fifth grade, the
state winners of this activity receive a Savings Bond. Posters
are due December 7, 2007.
Science Fair
Many of our fifth graders are preparing for the Carlisle Science
Fair. Our school Science Fair will be held at the end of January.
It is not too late to get a science fair packet and start
on a project. This is a great way to help your child prepare
for Science TAKS.
It’s Chilly Out There!
Brrr! Winter, or at least fall, has arrived and the cooler
weather seems here to stay. Please make sure you child dresses
appropriately for the weather. We do go out to recess as much
as possible. Also, many jackets and coats look alike, so please
label your child’s outerwear. Thanks for your help with
this.
STOP Canned Food Drive
The STOP canned food drive continues until the end of this
week. Our fifth graders are currently holding on to a narrow
lead with all grade levels participating in the worthy cause.
Way to go, Fifth Grade! Way to go, Carlisle!!
We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving
Break filled with family, friends and good food! Even though
there are only four weeks until winter break, we have a lot
to accomplish, including our move in the to the brand new
fifth grade area in the building. All of us are excited about
getting into our new classrooms.
