The Plano
Independent School District ESOL program is committed to educational excellence
and continuous achievement for all English language learners by embracing
bilingualism and biculturalism as valued resources.
Mission

The Plano
Independent School District Program believes that culturally and linguistically
diverse students should be provided a consistently high quality education
so that students are academically successful and prepared to meet the challenges
of a changing world.
The Program

provides
instruction for the English language learner in the most appropriate program
format in accordance with Texas Education Agency(TEA) guidelines.

instruction that reflects the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
and PISD curriculum guidelines in all content areas.

promotes
acceptance of ESOL instruction as an integral part of the whole school
program.

understanding and respect for diversity by students, parents, staff and

the student’s self esteem and promotes a positive school climate.

results and adjustments as warranted to address student learning a both

What is ESOL?
-
The English
for Speakers of Other Languages Program (ESOL) is an intensive program
designed to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
in the English language. All instruction is in English. The
instruction utilizes the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to
develop English language skills. The ESOL staff serves as a member
of the resource team that facilitates second language development.
This collaboration ensures that students perform at a level commensurate
to their linguistic proficiency and academic potential in all required
subjects.
What is the Goal?

The goal
of the ESOL program is to teach the students English so that they will
be academically successful in all classes.
What are the Benefits?

The ESOL
teacher is certified by the state to address the needs of limited English
proficient students.

ESOL
curriculum and materials including state adopted systems, technology, and
enrichment materials are designed to help limited English proficient students
learn English.

The home
culture is appreciated, and the culture of the United States is explained.

Instruction
is adapted in content subject classes in order to make lessons comprehensible
to the student.

will have access to regular classes and activities as well as to the ESOL
class.
