| Each year I like
to take the opportunity to give parents a little background
information on the Forman music department. The PISD music
curriculum is based on the concepts of Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967).
Kodaly believed that musical aptitude was a characteristic
to the development of the whole child. He also believed
that musical skills should be developed first at home and
then within the regular school curriculum.
The purpose of
the Elementary Music Curriculum is to present a program
of sequential, musical learning designed to develop an appreciation
of the joy of music making, an understanding of fine arts
from a variety of cultures and periods, and skill and independence
in performing, reading, writing and creating music.
The goal will
be achieved as students:
1. Build a repertoire
of songs, rhymes, singing games, play parties and dance
from a variety of cultures.
2. Understand
musical concepts.
3. Achieve mastery
of musical skills.
4. Perform, analyze
and listen to great art music.
5. Create, improvise
and compose original compositions.

OUR MUSIC TEACHERS
Judy
Smith -
This is my 13th year in PISD and my tenth year to teach
music at Forman Elementary. I have also taught at several
other Plano schools. I have a teaching career that spans
from Texas to New York to Alaska to California and back
to Texas. I have taught music from preschool to college.
In addition to music classes, I enjoy working with many
choirs here at Forman. Each year I take choir students to
the area Metroplex Festival and to the OAKE National Choir
Festival.
Music is what
you will find me doing after school as well as, taking my
children to choir rehearsals or instrumental lessons.
