The music program at Harrington Elementary includes:

  • Music for every child twice a week.
  • Developmentally appropriate music making.
  • Unaccompanied singing before the use of instruments.
  • Experience before notation.
  • Literacy (reading and writing) as the primary means for musical understanding.
  • Fine arts field trips to support curriculum.
  • The study of composers and a variety of musical compositions.
  • Free and guided movement, dancing, singing games, art and drama.

The kind of music instruction used at Harrington is commonly known as the “Kodaly Method” and is considered among the best practices for musical literacy as outlined in the current TEKS and National Standards for music in the elementary school.

At Harrington, the Music Room door is always open to parents who are eager to know more about what their children are learning in my class. I consider it a great privilege to feed anyone who is hungry for knowledge about the Arts.
