About Bettye Haun Picture of Bettye Haun

Bettye Lynn Spence was born in Van Alsytne, Texas, on February 25, 1934 to Harold Knox and Helen Elizabeth Taylor Spence. She graduated Valedictorian from Tom Bean high School in May, 1951 and attended the University of North Texas, University of Texas at Dallas, and other area colleges.

She was married on November 18, 1951 to William Howard Haun in the Little Chapel in the Woods on the campus of Texas Woman's University in Denton. The Haun's moved to Plano in 1954 where they raised two children; William Michael and Gaelyn Beth. She has five grandchildren.

Bettye was employed as the first secretary in Plano public schools in 1957 by Superintendent of Schools E.A. Sigler. She performed all clerical duties for the district-bookkeeping, purchasing, payroll, employment, textbooks, and served as a substitute teacher. She worked for Mr. Sigler until 1961 when he assumed another position with the district. She worked as school board secretary and administrative assistant to Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick, Superintendent of Schools, through his retirement in 1991. Bettye remained in the same position with Superintendent Dr. Jim Surratt for four years and Superintendent Dr. Douglas Otto for one year before her retirement in 1996. Betty and Howard live on a 120 acre ranch in Grayson County. Bettye currently volunteers with the Heritage Farmstead as a school docent and with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocated for Chlildren) in Grayson County. She is serving as chair of the Plano ISD Centennial Commission, an organization formed to promote the Plano Retired Teachers Association and serves on the legislative committee. She is also co-chair of Prime Adventurers, a group composed of senior citizens from the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sermon. She is a member of the Manta Book Club and is taking weekly watercolor lessons. Her hobbies, "besides grandchildren", include genealogy, reading, traveling, hiking and cooking.
