Bettye
Lynn Spence was born in Van Alsytne, Texas, on February
25, 1934 to Harold Knox and Helen Elizabeth Taylor Spence.
She graduated Valedictorian from Tom Bean high School in
May, 1951 and attended the University of North Texas, University
of Texas at Dallas, and other area colleges.
She was married on November 18, 1951 to William Howard Haun
in the Little Chapel in the Woods on the campus of Texas
Woman's University in Denton. The Haun's moved to Plano
in 1954 where they raised two children; William Michael
and Gaelyn Beth. She has five grandchildren.
Bettye
was employed as the first secretary in Plano public schools
in 1957 by Superintendent of Schools E.A. Sigler. She performed
all clerical duties for the district-bookkeeping, purchasing,
payroll, employment, textbooks, and served as a substitute
teacher. She worked for Mr. Sigler until 1961 when he assumed
another position with the district. She worked as school
board secretary and administrative assistant to Dr. H. Wayne
Hendrick, Superintendent of Schools, through his retirement
in 1991. Bettye remained in the same position with Superintendent
Dr. Jim Surratt for four years and Superintendent Dr. Douglas
Otto for one year before her retirement in 1996. Betty and
Howard live on a 120 acre ranch in Grayson County. Bettye
currently volunteers with the Heritage Farmstead as a school
docent and with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocated
for Chlildren) in Grayson County. She is serving as chair
of the Plano ISD Centennial Commission, an organization
formed to promote the Plano Retired Teachers Association
and serves on the legislative committee. She is also co-chair
of Prime Adventurers, a group composed of senior citizens
from the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sermon. She is
a member of the Manta Book Club and is taking weekly watercolor
lessons. Her hobbies, "besides grandchildren",
include genealogy, reading, traveling, hiking and cooking.
