About the Writing Center
The ability to write in a clear, organized, and effective style is a central part of your education at PSHS.  The Writing Center will help all students in need of writing improvement during any stage of the writing process.  We promote the view of writing as a process and advocate student ownership of their writing.  The Writing Center encourages the development of self-editing and self-assessment skills to empower students to become independent thinkers and writers.

What’s the focus?
You are welcome to come in for a conference regarding any type of writing at any point in the process from brainstorming to polishing a final draft.

You may meet with a tutor to

  • focus a topic
  • develop a thesis
  • organize your essay
  • strengthen specific paragraphs or sentences
  • revise a paper after grading
  • learn/practice grammatical concepts
  • enhance commentary

Tutors will not

  • Correct your paper for you
  • Impose our ideas on you
  • Put your ideas into our words
  • Guarantee a good grade on your paper

Students should come to a Writing Tutor with specific questions:  Is my thesis precise and assertive?  Does my topic sentence state the main idea a body paragraph?  Are my paragraphs coherent--do they hold together naturally?  Does my conclusion bring closure to the rest of the paper?  The Writing Center is not a "fix-it shop" where tutors correct all the problems; it is a learning opportunity for you to become a more effective and self-sufficient writer.

For the 2012-2013 school year, the Writing Center is available during zero hour with Mrs. Terrell.
