German I

GRADE LEVEL: 11/12

CREDIT: 1

PREREQUISITE: None

DESCRIPTION: German I is an introduction to the German world and its people. The main emphasis is on oral skills while developing reading and written skills. The student will be guided in recognizing the interrelationships of languages and will develop a cultural appreciation of the German speaking world. The focus of this course is on low novice proficiency. Computer and video learning is included.

OUTSIDE PROJECTS OR TOURNAMENTS: Students are encouraged to participate in regional and state academic and cultural competitions.

HOMEWORK: Students are expected to study German every night. Written homework will be given approximately three nights a week.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: Students who are strong in the English language will have an advantage grammatically. Yet, because English is a Germanic language, many students find German very easy to grasp.

German II

GRADE LEVEL: 11/12

CREDIT: 1

PREREQUISITE: German I

DESCRIPTION: German II continues to develop the oral skills with added emphasis on reading and writing skills. The focus is on time development of mid to novice proficiency. Expansion of vocabulary and grammatical structures continues. Contrast between English and German strengthens the language learning process. Culturally related activities of selected German speaking countries or regions will be explored.

OUTSIDE PROJECTS OR TOURNAMENTS: Students are encouraged to participate in regional and state academic cultural competitions. Students may participate in the National German Examination given at Plano Senior High School in January. The cost of the exam is borne by Plano Senior High.

HOMEWORK: Students are expected to study German every night. Written homework will be given approximately three nights a week. Students may also be asked to record some homework on a cassette which they provide.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: Students who have successfully completed German I and will probably not take more than two years of a language. It is not impossible to go to German III from German II. *If a student intends on pursuing the study of German, he should probably take German II Honors.

*If a student plans to continue into a level III course, it is advisable that the student enroll in a level II Honors course in order to be well prepared.

German II Honors

GRADE LEVEL: 11/12

PREREQUISITE: German I, teacher recommendation

DESCRIPTION: German II Honors is an expansion of German II. It is designed to provide opportunities for talented language students beyond those offered in the regular German II class. The course extends the essential elements. It stresses the development of low-intermediate proficiency in oral skills, accurate comprehension of contemporary and cultural reading passages; it expands the use of grammatical construction and vocabulary and begins the development of expository composition. culturally related activities of selected regions or countries will be explored.

OUTSIDE PROJECTS OR TOURNAMENTS: Student are encouraged to participate in regional and state academic and cultural competitions. Students may participate in the national German Examination given at Plano Senior High School in January. The cost of the exam is borne by Plano Senior High.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: Students who have easily mastered the concepts of German I and who are willing to put in extra effort in improving their communicative skills. Students who intend on studying German beyond high school should be enrolled in this course. Students who plan on taking German III should be in this course.

German III Honors

DESCRIPTION: German III Honors is designed to provide talented language students opportunities beyond those offered in other language classes. The course extends the essential elements. It utilizes high level/critical thinking and focuses on the development of mid-intermediate proficiency in oral skills, comprehension of German literature and history, expository composition and expanded use of grammar and vocabulary.

OUTSIDE PROJECTS OR TOURNAMENTS: Students are encouraged to participate in regional and state competitions. Students may participate in the National German Examination given at Plano Senior High School in January. The cost of the exam is borne by Plano Senior High School.

German IV AP

GRADE LEVEL: 11/12

CREDIT: 1

PREREQUISITE: German I, II, III, teacher recommendation

DESCRIPTION: German Honors/Advanced Placement meets the requirements for German Academic Honors in the Advanced Program. This course meets the requirements of a college course in German studies. It stresses the development of fluency in oral skills, comprehension of German literature and history, expository composition and expanded use of grammar. This course will have the opportunity to take the Advanced Placement Examination at the conclusion of this course.

OUTSIDE PROJECTS OR TOURNAMENTS: Students are encouraged to participate in regional and state competitions. Students will take the National German examination given at Plano Senior High School in January. The examination will be paid by Plano Senior High School. Students may elect to take the Advanced Placement Examination in May. This examination must be paid for by the student.

HOMEWORK: Students will have assignments every night. Because of the amount of material that must be covered in this course, it is imperative that the students be prepared to devote some time every day to the study of German. Some assignments in this class will be taped on student-provided cassettes. Students will be expected to do a great deal of independent study and reading.

German V AP

GRADE LEVEL: 12

CREDIT: 1

PREREQUISITE: German I, II, III, IV, teacher recommendation

DESCRIPTION: German V Honors AP is an extension of German IV Honors AP and is intended for those students who have begun their language study in a school system which offered five year of German. It is recommended that a student continue in German for the entire five years before taking the Advanced Placement exam if possible. The course will continue developing vocabulary, refining grammar and oral skills, comprehension of German literature and history and expository composition.
