Math Independent Studies
| CREDIT: | 1 |
| PREREQUISITE: | Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II |
| DESCRIPTION: | This is a course for juniors or seniors that are not quite ready for Precalculus. It covers many of the same topics as Precalculus but at a much slower pace and not as in depth. It reviews many of the Algebra 2 topics and has a nice introductory survey of Trigonometry. It also contains some Probability and Statistics. A student can go into Precalculus or AP Statistics after MIS. |
| HOMEWORK: | Students have homework nightly. Since the course requires higher level thinking, the homework requires more than the prerequisite courses have required. |
| TESTS: | Tests are mostly free response. Two or three tests are given per six weeks and count as 75% of the grade for the six weeks. |
| SPECIAL SUPPLIES: | Graphing Calculators – average cost $85.00 |
| NOTES: | This course is for the liberal arts student who will be going into precalculus in college or business calculus. It is for the non math and non science majors and about 60% lecture oriented 40 % group oriented. Students will have to think, analyze and study math (not just memorize) using the background from the prerequisite courses. As a general rule, the student’s averages in Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II should be 75 or higher. |
