.: Reading Applications

This is a one semester elective course recommended for college bound juniors and seniors who are reading on at least the tenth grade level. Every week students will learn an average of 20 new vocabulary words form the book Hot Words for the SAT I and practice strategies to increase verbal scores on college entrance tests. The course also offers students the opportunity to read selections from literature, magazines, newspapers, and various content area textbooks. Written on high school to college level difficulty, these selections provide practice in the types of reading students will encounter in their college courses. Students will use class time to read individually chosen novels on a regular basis and will participate in an assortment of critical thinking activities to develop problem-solving skills.

.: Reading I,II, and III

These courses are recommended for students who need additional instruction in reading comprehension, vocabulary, study skills, and effective learning strategies. Students who have not passed the reading portion of TAAS, or the English portion of the TAKS (beginning in 2003) should consider taking Reading. The course(s) may be taken for a semester or for a full year for up to three credits in reading. Students are exposed to a variety of reading materials, including novels, short stories, textbook selections, and magazine articles. Students also work on a computer program that allows them to work on their specific needs.
