A Tale of Tornado Terror
By David Z.
“Wow, what an amazing story!” I said. We had just finished reading finished Tornadoes! , a Time for Kids story on, of course, tornadoes. I liked the picture for the title. It was a nice picture. I wondered what it would be like in that picture, as I rubbed it in envy. Suddenly, a genie flew out of the page. “I am the genie of the page!” he boomed “You want to be in the page, so be it!” He pointed his finger at me. The room flashed, and I found myself in the picture. I heard an ominous noise that sounded like a train at full speed. I turned around. It was a HUGE tornado that looked like the CN tower upside down, leaving a large trail of destruction. The genie, which was still there, laughed and said, “Enjoy!” He disappeared in a flash. I ran to the spot, yelling “Wait! How do you get out?!?” When it was clear he wasn’t coming back, I stopped running and sighed. I looked around. No one was in sight. They all had evacuated. I ran, sprinting down the road. When I couldn’t run any more, I stopped. Panting heavily, I waited for the tornado to engulf me in its swirling vortex mass of dirt and debris. It swept me up, spinning me around and around. Even though I was dizzy beyond recognition, I managed to yell, “Curse you, Genie!” A tree trunk flew by my head and knocked me unconscious. I woke up with my head throbbing floating in a dark room. A distant light was pulsing. “David, David”, it chanted “Am I dead?” I thought. “David, David”; the light was chanting, now louder and faster. “Well, might as well go to heaven.” I started floating towards the light. Then, the light didn’t chant any more. Instead, it said, “David, wake up already! How many times do I have to say your name!?!” I opened my eyes. “Huh?” I lifted my head. “What happened? Is this heaven?” My teacher, Ms. Wood, sighed. “No, David, this is school, where you were napping in class… again. Now, as I was saying, your next assignment is to write a story on a picture in your reading book. It’s due Friday.” I looked down at my open reading book I was using as a pillow. The picture of the tornado on the title stared right back at me. I smiled. This is going to be one easy assignment.
