Course Descriptions

 

These classes are designed for students whose first language is not English. Students are tested to assess their proficiency in English and placed appropriately. Beginning classes are for non-English speakers. Students progress through a structured program that increases the students' ability to use English for listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

English for Immigrants: English 1 SOL & English 2 SOL

These English classes are for students who are recent immigrants. Students study English literature according to the TAKS developed for 9th and 10th grade. These are the state approved courses in English for ESL students.

Sheltered Reading I and II: These are ESOL reading courses designed for students who are recent immigrants. Emphasis will be placed on language acquisition. Students will also work on increasing reading skills, critical reading skills for TAKS and developing a student's life long desire to read.

Content-based Science for ESL
This course is for beginning-level students. It teaches English through the use of science materials. Students learn and use the vocabulary of science with an emphasis on biology and health, and physics and chemistry.

Content-based Social Studies for ESL
This course is for beginning-level students. It teaches English through the use of social studies materials. Students learn and use the vocabulary of social studies with an emphasis on World Geography and American History.
