Academics
Sixth grade students rotate through 6 subject areas: Art, Foreign Language, Keyboarding, Skills for Living,Theater, and Study Skills. Each three week overview provides an opportunity for students to see what is offered as semester courses in the seventh and eighth grade.
Sixth grade exploratory art gives students an opportunity to experience various art making techniques that will be studied extensively in seventh and eighth grades.
In Foreign Language, students learn basic greetings, expressions, numbers and colors in Spanish, French, German and Latin. The course is designed to aide students in choosing the language they are most interested in for high school credit.
Keyboarding comprises several major objectives to enable students to acquire the habit of using their keyboard as a basic communication tool in the preparation of personal and school papers. Using Keyboarding for Computer Success, students will accomplish sufficient keyboarding skill to be able to operate the keyboard by touch. In addition, they will practice mastering correct techniques of good posture, hand position, key stroking, and proper response patterns to help prevent repetitive stress injuries. Students will also attain the best possible speed and accuracy according to their individual capabilities. While practicing keyboarding skills, students will have the opportunity to review Microsoft basic skills and to improve punctuation and proofreading.
Skills for Living provides a comfortable setting to practice decision making skills and to explore personal development, peer pressure, and stress and time management. It offers a laboratory setting for food preparation. Various foods are sampled during the demonstrations as well as student preparation.
Study Skills is a class which teaches the students the importance of developing good study habits at a young age. Some of the topics discussed include: Organization, Learning Styles, Following Directions, Test-Taking Strategies, Note-Taking, Time Management, Listening Skills, and Memory Techniques.
In the Theater Arts Exploratory rotation students will learn the basic concepts of public speaking, as well as engage in two performance projects over the 3 week period. Sixth graders will perform in a pantomime and a storytelling project with the opportunity to perform as a member of the speech team at middle school speech tournaments.
