Hughston
Volunteer Opportunities

One of the things that separates Hughston from good schools and makes it a great school is the number of parent volunteers we have each year. Our parents’ involvement has an incredible impact on the quality of the educational experience at Hughston. Volunteers enjoy being part of the action at school and getting to know other parents and students, and send a clear message to their children that their school is important to them. We invite you to join a special group of people — Hughston Volunteers!

Volunteers help provide our kids with programs and services that keep Hughston strong. If you’d like to work with a group of other parents and/or lead the way in one of these areas, let us know! We’ll provide all the support and information you need to do a great job!

Busy? Not a lot of time to spare?
Not all PTA projects involve monthly meetings or lots of time. Our awesome moms, dads, and grandparents contribute to so many different projects and activities! Our volunteers work in the classroom, the office, on the school grounds, and even at home on special projects. Volunteer opportunities can be on an on-going basis or for a one-time project only. Brief job descriptions are listed below.
If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Lewis, V.P. Volunteers at 972-758-0738.

HOMEROOM COORDINATOR(Room Parents: 2 per class)
Homeroom Coordinators at Hughston Elementary are very important to the success of our programs. They must be willing to call each and every parent in their child’s class to enlist help for fall and spring fundraising events, class parties, and other activities. They must be organized and parent friendly. Homeroom Coordinators are responsible for planning and implementing 3 classroom parties a year. A Lead Room Parent is responsible for coordinating and distributing information from the teachers or PTA Board to the other room parents in their particular grade level. PTA depends on these Homeroom Coordinators to inform our parents of the importance of their participation in school functions and be a liaison between them and the appropriate committee.

HOSPITALITY
Hospitality gives volunteers the opportunity to show the Hughston staff and parents how much we appreciate them. Volunteer opportunities include Teacher Appreciation Week, the Welcome Back Luncheon for staff, and the Welcome Back Coffee for parents. On parent-teacher conference days, volunteers may be called upon to help decorate the school, serve lunch to the teachers, or bring in food. Volunteers are needed for community events including Donuts for Dads, Muffins for Mom and other special events throughout the school year.

S.T.O.P. (Students Thinking of Peers)
The S.T.O.P. program is a great program that benefits all students by teaching good decision making skills and striving to make each student feel like they are an important part of this program. You will be working with the school counselor and the 4th and 5th grade students at Hughston on a variety of S.T.O.P. projects. A few of the projects include: Drug Awareness (Red Ribbon) Week (organize, decorate, count out ribbons, etc.), Friendship Week, STOP Skate Night (make fliers, posters, and chaperone), and STOP Pizza Nights.

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION
This committee works to beautify the Hughston school grounds. We need your help with ideas, planting and maintaining the gardens and grounds, and yearly environmental programs.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS
Library volunteers help the children check in and out their books along with circulation and shelving. Volunteers are also asked to help at the school Book Fairs held twice a year. There are morning and afternoon shifts and you may work on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule and you can choose the days that are most convenient.

PHOTO PARENTS
These parents are available to photograph school events and activities so we can show off our great students in the newsletters, yearbook, etc. Photo Parents should have a digital camera. The group will be coordinated and scheduled by a single volunteer.

YEARBOOK
The yearbook is an annual volume that chronicles the activities and people of Hughston Elementary. Volunteers can help by taking pictures, page layout, and copy writing/editing.

FIELD DAY
Field Day is a one-day outdoor spring event for all Hughston students. Volunteers are needed for morning and afternoon shifts and are asked to help with different field day activities coordinated by the P.E. department.

FUNDRAISING
Fundraising provides a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. You may sign up to help stuff packets, tally orders, sort merchandise, or help on pick-up days. Volunteer opportunities are also available for the Spring Fling, the school’s largest fundraiser of the year.

ON CALL VOLUNTEERS
For those special projects that might need a few extra sets of hands.

*Volunteer Opportunities specific to each grade, such as field trip chaperones, workroom, lunchroom, and classroom helpers are provided at individual grade levels.

NOTE: All volunteers are required to complete a Volunteer Information Form and will be cleared by a Background Check before volunteering. Please complete your Volunteer Information Form on-line at www.pisd.edu/parents (click on PTA/Volunteering) as soon as possible so it can be processed promptly.
