Mathews' counselor is Mrs. Mo Barbaro-Schwartz. She loves working with children, teachers and parents to help each child develop outstanding character, increase their self-worth and self-esteem while always putting forth their personal best academically. She has been an educator with Plano Independent School District for the past 27 years. She has seven children (six boys and one girl), ranging in age from 22 to 11 years old. She enjoys spending time with all of them and her friends. Her two favorite places are the beach and the mountains. She enjoys snow-skiing, snowmobiling and relaxing on the beach.

The guidance classes meet weekly and include such topics as: respect, responsibility, honesty, drug awareness, friendship, decision-making skills, personal safety, study/test-taking strategies, conflict management, career awareness and college readiness. Small group sessions are available as needed for social skills, friendship, anger management, stress, and problem solving. Parental consent is always needed for students to participate in the small group sessions. The Mathews Guidance Program incorporates a TEAM approach and works closely with teachers, parents, and faculty to insure the continued social, emotional, and academic success of our students.

Mathews' half-time counselor is Mary Alice Hendrix. She shares time between Mathews and Daffron Elementary Schools. This is her 2nd year at Mathews and Daffron. She feels very fortunate to work here with our students, parents, and staff. She believes that we are a partnership, and a counselor’s goal is to do everything we can to work together to help children be successful.

Her husband Charley is a band director at Jasper High School. Mrs. Hendrix enjoys attending all of the Jasper band events throughout the year.
