My role encompasses a complex array of roles and job responsibilities. Of course, my favorite roles are those that directly involve students, teachers, and families. I have the unique opportunity to teach every class in the building through my guidance classes. Together we explore many topics that may include building character, friendship, personal safety, and goal setting. Depending upon the need, I work with students in the classroom setting, small group, and individually. I also have many administrative roles that involve state mandated testing and district/campus assigned duties.

I'd like to explain my role as an extra teacher in the building who is here to help either a child, parent, or teacher. I am not a therapist but a friend, a listener, a problem solver, a helper, and a cheerleader. I hope my actions and responses show how much I care about children and how passionate I am about my job. Education, for me, is a personal pursuit that requires my whole self, my heart, and much of my day. I am truly honored to be your Mitchll School Counselor for the 2009 - 2010 school year. I look forward to another year of hope and promise. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can help you or your child in any way.

My philosophy is simple. I love children. Every child is a special gift. I like to think of children as filled with discovered and undiscovered gifts and talents. You never quite know what is behind the next bit of wrapping! I believe in being excited and encouraging about the future of our children. Yes - you guessed it! I am unabashed to say I am a hopeless optimist when it comes to children and even their struggles and setbacks. I have seen the impact of the power of positive thinking and I will continue to believe that each child has the potential of living an incredible and meaningful life. And so, I come to Mitchell every day hoping to make a difference in the life of a child. Although I am only one counselor in a building of 600+ students, I hope each student is able to look back at our time together and know that I cared, encouraged, and wanted for them the very best that life can offer. Of course, my philosophy, is not unique to the incredible staff and administration we have at Mitchell.

I have spent much of my childhood and adult life pursuing a career that embodies the belief that one's life can make a lasting difference in another. I have the unique experience of attending and graduating universities in both Australia and America. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication/Public Relations, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Masters in School Counseling. I also went back to college to acquire my education classes. I am a teacher at heart and come from a family of principals and teachers. The calling of education started in high school with a career inventory. At the time I was not convinced. As a result, I worked in the corporate and non-profit world before going back, once again, to college to become and educator. Yes, the youth in me challenged the pursuit of education early in my adult life but I have finally come home...full circle!

Lifelong learning is a continued pursuit of mine. Much of my life has involved working as well as attaining academic goals. I look forward to one day re-challenging myself as I pursue a doctorate, but for now, I am enjoying having a job I love and a family that loves me when I get home. My greatest accomplishments are marrying my best friend and having the privilege to love and be loved by the daughter of my heart - my 15 year old. Be reassured, I do understand that parenting is indescribably rewarding but also, at times, very perplexing and challenging.

My educational experience includes teaching 5th grade, Special Education, and Title I Reading. I am going in to my 6th year as an Elementary School Counselor and 10th year as an educator.
