Family Role

The most accurate predictor of a student’s achievement in school is not income or social status, but the extent to which that student’s family is able to:

  1. Create a home environment that encourages learning.
  2. Express high (but not unrealistic) expectations for their children’s achievement and future careers.
  3. Become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community.

Family Relations and Parent Expectation

The good news is that parents are powerful

  • Parental influence can override the limiting effects of low socioeconomic status.
  • Family relations are a better indicator of a child’s attitudes toward school than socioeconomic status.
  • The single most important factor in parental influence and academic success is the expectation held by the parents for the educational attainments of their children.

The program is designed to introduce parents to the tools necessary to assist and teach their own children. Every child should have an “even start” when he or she enters the public school system. By helping the family unit become stronger through adult education, parent education, early childhood education and family literacy activities, our program helps in this endeavor.

A critical core concept is that good things happen when mother, father and children work, think and learn together – it is what makes the program one of the most valuable opportunities for families. Our program does and will continue to rely on the effective rallying of the community and its services both for maximum effect and fiscal efficiency. The community, in productive ways, gathers around individual families in supportive services; this is the essence of collaboration and essential to our existence.

Family literacy is at once an appealing concept. It addresses education in the context of family and provides educational services to both adults and children. It also has the potential to strengthen relationships within the family, the schools and the community.

Family literacy programs offer opportunity to address the educational needs of families in a holistic and comprehensive manner. Family literacy puts family needs and concerns first and builds educational activities around those needs and concerns. This emphasis may increase the motivation of participants, change their relationships with schools and the community and, ultimately, increase the value of education in our society.

“A more literate, better education population is unquestionably that best long-term solution to America’s poverty problem.” National Center for Family Literacy

“Millions of American families are trapped in a cycle of poverty, dependency and undereducation. Hopelessness has replaced hope. Family literacy offers a ladder that extends down to their hopelessness and helps them develop the power to reach new levels of achievement, self sufficiency, and strength as a family.”
Sharon Darling, President, National Center for Family Literacy

Corporate support for family literacy is vital – when your corporation gives to one program that is involved in family literacy, you are helping all of society. Breaking the cycle of illiteracy will produce better citizens, more dedicated workers in the workplace, better parents to future generations and a higher degree of self-esteem. Literacy is a gift that programs like Plano Family Literacy give to those who want to learn. By supplying a facility where parents feel comfortable, they will continue their dedication to learning.
