The program is designed to introduce parents to the tools necessary to assist and teach their own children. Every child should have an “even start” when he or she enters the public school system. By helping the family unit become stronger through adult education, parent education, early childhood education and family literacy activities, our program helps in this endeavor.
A critical core concept is that good things happen when mother, father and children work, think and learn together – it is what makes the program one of the most valuable opportunities for families. Our program does and will continue to rely on the effective rallying of the community and its services both for maximum effect and fiscal efficiency. The community, in productive ways, gathers around individual families in supportive services; this is the essence of collaboration and essential to our existence.
Family literacy is at once an appealing concept. It addresses education in the context of family and provides educational services to both adults and children. It also has the potential to strengthen relationships within the family, the schools and the community.
Family literacy programs offer opportunity to address the educational needs of families in a holistic and comprehensive manner. Family literacy puts family needs and concerns first and builds educational activities around those needs and concerns. This emphasis may increase the motivation of participants, change their relationships with schools and the community and, ultimately, increase the value of education in our society.
