Bilingual/ESL Program Description 2007-2008
For students who have limited English proficiency, the Plano Independent School District offers bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.
Bilingual Education
The Bilingual Program (PK-5) is a full-time instructional program in which both the students’ home language and English are used for instruction. Students study the same curriculum as the English-speaking students. The only difference is that both languages are used for instruction. The primary goal of bilingual education is to enable students of limited English proficiency to become competent in the English language and to have an EQUAL opportunity to master grade level Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) using their first language while they are acquiring English.
English as a Second Language(ESL)
ESL is an intensive program designed to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the English language. All instruction is in English. The goal of the ESL program is to teach the students English so that they will be academically successful in all classes. The following programs are offered:
- Half-Day Pre-Kindergarten Bilingual Spanish and ESL for 4 years olds
- Barron Early Childhood School
- Beaty Early Childhood School
- Pearson Early Childhood School
- Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Bilingual (Chinese)
- Harrington Elementary: All elementary schools
- Elementary: Bilingual (Spanish)
If the home school does not have a bilingual program, limited English proficient (LEP) students will be transferred for the entire school day to a school that offers these services, and they will continue as students of these schools until they are dismissed from the program. Transportation by school bus is available.
