MATHCOUNTS

A MIDDLE SCHOOL COMPETITION

MATHCOUNTS is a national competition for middle school students designed to stimulate interest and achievement in mathematics.  Students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are eligible for MATHCOUNTS competitions, however, materials are targeted to a 7th and 8th grade audience.  Up to eight students per school are allowed to compete -- one team of four and four individuals.  However, campus participation is not limited to a certain number of students.  The Chapter competition is held at the University of Texas at Dallas campus in February.  Chapter winners advance to the state competition in Austin usually during March.  Regional and state competitions are organized and hosted by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.  The national competition takes place in May.

At the national level MATHCOUNTS is sponsored by:

  • National Society of Professional Engineers
  • Partially funded in Texas by the Gifted and Talented Programs of TEA
  • CNA Insurance Companies
  • General Motors
  • Dow Chemical
  • National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
  • NASA
  • The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the NASSP Advisory List of National Contests and Activities.
