Career & Technical Education Courses
Career education
offers an opportunity to learn the skills students may use in high school,
in college, in a career after graduation and/or as a financial means
to help further their education. In addition, career education helps
develop qualities needed to succeed in the world of work. The career
education courses are described in the following text. The Plano Independent
School District offers career programs in agriculture science, family
and consumer sciences, marketing education, trade and industry education,
health science technology, business and information technology, and
technology education. It is the policy of the Plano Independent School
District not to discriminate on the basis of sex, handicap, race, color,
and national origin in its career education programs or activities as
required by Title IX, Section 504 and Title VI.
The Plano Independent
School District will take steps to assure that lack of English language
skills will not be a barrier to admission and participation in all career
education programs.
A first-year
student planning to enroll in a career preparation (co-op) program or a 2 - 3 hour pre-employment
lab is expected to complete a student information form. This form may
be obtained from the counselor's office.
A student who successfully
completes a two-or a three-hour career preparations course may receive a waiver of
one semester of state required physical education for each semester
of the course. The student may receive up to three semesters of physical
education credit through participation in a two-or three-hour career
education course. This three-semester waiver meets the state graduation
requirements for physical education. A student may not receive
both physical education credit and a physical education waiver credit
during the same semester. Also, a student may not receive two waiver
credits during the same semester.
The state health
credit required for graduation may be fulfilled by successful completion
of both semesters of Medical Science Careers.
Tech prep courses
offer college credit through Collin County Community College at no cost
to the student and are described in the text of the qualifying career
education course description. A student must be enrolled in the Tech
Prep Program at CCCC and earn 6 hours of credit.
