Summer Activity

June - August

Attention all 3rd and 4th Grade students! The annual History Fair will take place next school year. One idea for a summer activity is to investigate some ideas for the upcoming fair.

The theme for next year's History Fair is "Innovation in History: Impact and Change." Students may enter a media presentation (on a laptop or other media) or a display presentation (on a foam board). Also, students may enter individually or as a group.

All the rules and guidelines will be available next school year but now is a good time to start thinking about and researching this interesting topic!

Flag Day

June 14

The 4th of July was always celebrated as America’s birthday, but the idea of an annual day to celebrate the Flag is believed to have started in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for his students in Wisconsin to observe June 14th as Flag Birthday.  August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Father's Day

June 21

Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.  In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
