5th Grade / 1st Six Weeks
Overarching Concept: Communication
Organizing Idea: The Ins and Outs Of Communication
Unit Contents
This Organizing Idea gives students opportunities to explore communication from a geographic and scientific perspective. Students participate in activities that involve them in the use of tools that geographers and scientists use to communicate information. Students learn about the Protist, Moneran, and Fungi Kingdoms of living things as well as the invertebrates from the Animal Kingdom. The importance of clear and accurate scientific communication is reinforced as they investigate properties of matter such as mass, volume, buoyancy, and density. The importance of translating geographic data onto a map allows students to determine the difference in absolute and relative location. They use tools of a geographer including a grid, legend, symbols, and a compass rose. Additionally, students identify the location of the 50 states, learn about the regions of the United States, and research one of these regions in depth.
