Organizing Idea: How Variables Cause Change

Unit Contents

The concept of variables and the realization that variables cause change to occur will be studied in this Organizing Idea. Students learn to identify different types of variables. Students explore variables that cause change in the surface of the Earth. They investigate movements of the Earth's crust which cause earthquakes and volcanoes. Students learn about the continuity of the development of the United States and the historic variables that impacted our country from 1850-1929. They explore westward expansion using a computer simulations embedded in the unit, which involve the students in the historical events of this time period. Students also learn that industrialization immigration, and urbanization caused changes in the environment. They discover that as the United States was accumulating land, a strong military, and wealth, it was becoming a world power.
