Unit Contents
This Organizing Idea focuses on the early settlers of Texas, and the crops that were grown at Spanish missions become a stepping-stone for the study of nutritional elements and an evaluation of the students' diets as compared with people of long ago. They study the parts and functions of plants, photosynthesis and pollination. As a continuation of the study of the history of Texas, students learn about the conflicts with Mexico, the Declaration of Independence, and the Texas Revolution. Students discover famous Texans and highlight their contributions to the state.

Six Flags Over Texas: A Cultural Feast - by Brenda McElyea
Students discuss then research cultures that have influenced Texas. For homework they prepare a dish to share during a Cultural Feast.
