Organizing Idea: What's the Connection?
Unit Contents
In order to help young students understand the concept of interactions, this Organizing Idea focuses on the idea of a connection as a relationship. Students investigate the connection between national patriotic holidays and customs and traditions. They will learn about the relationships between weather and choices in clothing and activities. The connection between healthy habits and wellness will also be explored. Studying the connections between animal body parts and they way the animal eats, moves, and protects itself will also be a focus of this six weeks of instruction.

The Hare and the Tortoise
Students will use Venn diagram to compare & contrast details of stories.
Hush a Bye Babies
Students will understand simple story structure characters (who), setting (where)(when). Discuss character, setting, what happens at the beginning (problem), and the end of the story (solution).
Moonbear’s Pet by Frank Asch
Use this story to focus on animal homes.
Random-Acts-of-Kindness
Read and discuss characters, main ideas from the story. Review parts of a book.

Listen to see what information you hear about how & when a bat sleeps and how and when a bird sleeps. Compare the information.

Stephen F. Austin: Father of Texas - by Brenda Burnett
Students will learn how Stephen F. Austin contributed to colonization in Texas. They place the events in order and then retell the story.
