Organizing Idea: A Matter Of Time

Unit Contents

Students will learn about continuity and change while studying about properties of matter, traditions of the past, chemical changes, changes in transportation and changes in food preservation. They will study the components of geography, early settlers of their community and construct a timeline emphasizing changes over decades and centuries. Students will create a multimedia "scrapbook" reflecting continuity and change. Fire safety and food preservation will also be studied.

Author's Purpose - Fact Opinion - Genres - by Kim Murff
The students will be reminded of how the author's purpose for writing books helps to determine a book's genre. Students will also practice finding facts and opinions in informational books as well as advertisements.

Dewey Decimal System - 500's and 600's - by Sarah Peters
Students will be able to describe the difference between the 500's (Natural Science) and the 600's (Applied Science). They will also be able to locate books on the shelves when given a category name (e.g., astronomy). Using all available resources in the Media Center, students will be able to find answers to trivia questions in these categories. (Can be used with 4th and 5th Grades also.)
