Unit Contents

Students review and refine problem-solving strategies and learn about simple machines. They will design a game using one or more of these machines. Then students explore how domesticated animals help solve problems and sometimes create problems for people by using the Big Six research method. They learn how to prevent germs from spreading and learn information about good health practices. Problems between people are discussed and students explore ways to resolve these problems. The culminating activity will be a Third Grade Fair which will feature student-created games made from simple machines, exhibits and electronic presentations of domesticated animals, advertisements for disease prevention, and real life opportunities for people to solve problems with other people. Students will learn about our free enterprise system as they study economics.

Students observe and gather information from an online source. Review biographies, using one of Isaac Newton as an example- What is a biography?- How do individuals impact our understanding of today's technology?
