Overarching Concept: Diversity

Organizing Idea: Proud To Be an American

Unit Contents

In this Organizing Idea students understand how and why they live in a community rich in diversity. They study the use of the magnet as the technology that allowed Columbus to sail across the Atlantic and how that contributed to the movement of people from Europe, Africa, and Asia to the United States. As the students are introduced to the concept of immigration, they map the arrival of their own families to the United States and to their community. Each class of students studies a country of the world in depth and shares their information with another class.
