| The secondary music program of the Plano ISD is designed to provide
opportunities for each student to develop his/her creative talents
in a number of ways. The program consists of four areas---band,
choir, orchestra, and music theory.
The choir program at the middle school begins with group instruction
in the sixth grade. These classes meet daily and focus on establishing
and developing basic musical and performance skills. The classes
combine on two or more occasions during the year to present concerts
for the parents and public. In the seventh and eighth grades,
students are provided an opportunity to enroll in either treble,
tenor/bass, or mixed choir.
The goal of the program at the middle school is to introduce
the student to choral techniques and to develop an appreciation
of music. These choirs perform from three to five concerts each
year, including performances for the University Interscholastic
League (UIL) concert and sightreading events. Students may elect
to participate in the PISD solo-ensemble contest, or the all-region
choir, to further develop their individual musicianship. Rehearsal
time outside the school day is usually limited.
The ninth and tenth grade, or high school, choirs challenge the
student with more varied and difficult literature than that provided
in the middle schools. Students are given a broader range of music
with more demanding vocal techniques. Participation in UIL events
continues in the high school years and is expanded to include
solo-ensemble events. In addition to the local performance opportunities,
the high school choirs take an in-state, overnight trip on alternate
years.
Throughout the years, the senior high choirs from the Plano ISD
have performed at major conventions and competitions across the
nation, including appearances at the American Choral Directors
Association, the International Association of Jazz Educators,
and the Texas Music Educators Association conventions.. These
are the most advanced choirs in the district and offer expanded
performance opportunities to the eleventh and twelfth grade students.
UIL competition continues at this level, with literature often
encompassing many pieces in the composers' native language. The
senior high choirs take an overnight trip each year.
Jazz or show choirs are offered as an afterschool program at
the high school level. At the senior high level, there is a jazz
or show choir class that meets daily. Students are auditioned
for placement in this group. Jazz or show choirs from all the
high schools and senior high schools perform several concerts
throughout the year, as well as entering selected competitions
at local universities.
