SUPPLEMENTAL MUSIC LESSON PROGRAM

The Plano Supplemental Music Lesson Program is offered as an enrichment to the 6th through 12th grade music program instruction, provided by private contractors.  These lessons are designed to utilize the characteristic literature and exercises of the instrument or voice, rather than to rehearse the music a student will be performing in his or her school organization.

Lessons are offered to interested students, on their home campus, either before or after school, or during one music class period per week for approximately 25 minutes.  The cost per lesson is set district-wide and adjusted periodically in accordance with local market factors.

Participation in these supplemental lessons is optional.  Students who elect not to participate in supplemental lessons will not be penalized in anyway related to their music class activities.  All students will have access to supplemental lessons.  Students and parents interested in supplemental music lessons should contact their campus director.

Student's Responsibility to the Private Music Contractor:

            1.         Be fully prepared for each lesson.

            2.         Follow guidelines pertaining to absenteeism.

            3.         Provide documentation of required practice time each week.

4.         Supply method books and other materials as required by the private teacher.

            5.         Participate in all activities required as a condition of private study.

Lesson Location and Scheduling:

Lessons during the day will be taught in the school the student attends.

Lessons will be scheduled by the band, choir, or orchestra director of each school for the students in the program who desire to participate.  Lessons will be twenty-five minutes in length.

These lessons may be scheduled during the student's band/choir/orchestra class, lunch hour, and before or after school.  No lessons will be scheduled during non-music classes.

It will be the responsibility of the student to notify his/her supplemental music instructor at least twenty-four hours in advance if a lesson is to be cancelled unless, of course, a serious emergency arises.  This courtesy is also the responsibility of the supplemental music instructor if he/she must cancel a lesson.

The school directors will aid the student in advising the private music contractor of concerts, programs, holidays, etc., which would result in any interruption of the regular lesson schedule.

Financial Implications:

Guidelines from the Texas Education Agency, allow supplemental music teachers to be paid directly by students or parents.  Checks from individuals for student lessons should be made out to the individual contractor.  Private music contractors are responsible for all matters related to billing and collection of fees for lessons.

Enrollment:

Enrollment by the students in the supplemental music lesson program is on a completely voluntary basis.  School music directors will not put any undue pressure on students to take supplemental music lessons.  Termination of lessons by the student, private music contractor, or organization director will be accomplished by written notice to the student or teacher and the campus director.

Private music contractors are assigned as requested by the student, if possible.  In some cases, individual schedules will not allow the requested contractor to serve a particular student or campus.  Questions concerning assignment of supplemental music teachers should be directed to your student's band, choir, or orchestra director.  Questions concerning lesson dates and times, or number of lessons taught, should be directed to your student's private music contractor.

Independent Music Contractor Clearance Procedures

Independent Music Contractor Clearance Procedures

To be eligible to teach in Plano ISD schools, an individual must be on the official cleared list of Independent Music Contractors on file in the Plano ISD Fine Arts Office.  Following a successful interview/audition with one or more of the senior high school directors listed above, the individual will receive a packet of information and required forms.

Requirements for clearance (application, insurance, fee, and badge) outlined below.

Music Contractors must submit the following application paperwork:

Plano ISD Supplemental Music Lesson Contractor Application Form

        Plano ISD Independent Contractor Agreement

Volunteer/Contracted Services Criminal History Check (Campus Code is 862).

Music Contractors must obtain professional liability insurance.

The liability insurance offered by TMEA meets district requirements; other insurance policies will have to be cleared through the Risk Management Office. The TMEA application form and instructions are available on-line at www.tmea.org .

It is recommended that contractors apply by July 1, so that individuals will be insured, verified, and cleared to teach by the first day of school.

Contractors are responsible for tracking the insurance processing.  If using TMEA, Plano ISD must receive verification  directly from TMEA that the individual has liability insurance to complete this portion of the clearance process.

Music Contractors must pay the following school building fees:

There is a $25 building fee for each semester—fall, spring, and summer.

The fall semester fee is due after the contractor have been cleared to teach.  This $25 payment must be paid on the day the individual picks up their contractor badge (see below).

The spring semester fee is due by in mid January, and the summer fee is due on the first date of facility usage.

As an incentive, contractors may submit a payment combining both semester building usage fees and receive the discounted rate of $40.00.

Music Contractors must obtain a badge to wear on campuses:

When the independent music contractor has been cleared to teach, the Fine Arts Department will notify them directly. At that time, individuals may pick up a letter that will authorize the Security Department to issue your independent contractor badge.

Information on the forms submitted is for Fine Arts office use only. Once an individual has been cleared to teach, their name, address, e-mail address, and the instruments being taught will be submitted to the directors at all Plano ISD middle schools, high schools, and senior highs.

Independent music contractors receive payment directly from their students and are responsible for all billing and collection. The lesson rate is set district-wide and adjusted periodically in accordance with local market factors.
