Intramural Music Programs

The Plano ISD offers a wide variety of intramural music programs for its students. A description of those programs offered are as follows:


All-City Middle School Band

Students in grades seven and eight have an opportunity to audition for the all-city middle school band. Three bands, each consisting of approximately seventy musicians, are selected by audition each fall. Auditions are usually held the last week in October or the first week in November. The bands then rehearse the following Friday evening and Saturday and present a concert for the parents and community on Saturday evening. Audition materials are available from the middle school band directors beginning the second week in August. Clinicians for these bands are nationally and internationally recognized directors. Previous clinicians include Howard Dunn, Bobby Floyd, Fred Allen, Bobby Francis, Quincy Hilliard, Cheryl Floyd, Larry Tucker, David Holsinger, Abby Villarreal, and others.

2006-2007 info as follows:
Middle School band students will participate in TMEA Region 25 All-Region Band activities for the 2006-2007 school year, in lieu of All-City Band.

District/Cluster-wide Solo & Ensemble Events

Students in all areas of the music program are offered an opportunity to participate in solo & ensemble events. Depending on the size of the student population being served, these events are organized either district-wide or by feeder cluster. Middle school choir events are usually scheduled in the fall, while the high school choir and the instrumental events are held in late January or early February. Students are expected to provide their own music, accompanist, and entry fees.

Middle School Summer Band Camp

The Plano ISD offers summer band camp opportunities for students in grades six through eight. Two one-week day camps are offered, typically during the first half of June. Students may register for one or both weeks of camp. The first week is focused to students at the Beginner-Intermediate level of experience, while the second week serves students at the Intermediate-Advanced level. Both camps operate from 8:00 A.M. until noon, Monday through Friday. A culminating concert for the community and parents is held on each Friday evening. Bus transportation is available from central points throughout the district.

The dates of the Plano ISD Middle School Band Camp for 2008 are June 16-20 for Beginner-Intermediate and June 23-27 for Intermediate-Advanced. The location for 2008 is Plano East Senior High, 3000 Los Rios, Plano, TX, 75074. Registration deadline for 2008 is May 16.

Middle School Summer Strings Camp

The Plano ISD offers summer strings camp opportunities for students who have completed grades six through eight. The one week camp is typically scheduled during the first half of June. Students will audition for placement in one of two performing groups, based upon ability and experience. The camp operates from 8:00 A.M. until noon, Monday through Friday. A culminating concert for the community and parents is held on Friday evening. Bus transportation is available from central points throughout the district.

The dates of the Plano ISD Middle School Strings Camp for 2008 are June 9-13. The location for 2008 is Plano East Senior High School, 3000 Los Rios, Plano, TX, 75074. Entry deadline is May 16, 2008.

Spring Choir & Orchestra Festivals

Students enrolled in the middle school choir and orchestra programs may participate as a group in the spring choir/orchestra festival. This festival provides each group an opportunity to be evaluated by a panel of three outstanding adjudicators. Participation in the festival is free to the students.

Plano East Senior High Invitational Marching Contest

The Plano East Senior High band booster club sponsors an annual invitational marching contest each year. The contest is traditionally held on a Saturday in mid-October, beginning at mid-day and extending until approximately 9:00 pm. Over thirty outstanding bands from across the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex, as well as occasional bands from outside the area, participate in this event. Judges invited from across the country name winners from within each classification, as well as the overall contest.

Plano Senior High School Drum Line Contest

The Plano Senior High School band booster club sponsors an annual drum-line contest each year. The contest is traditionally held on a Saturday in late September, beginning at mid-day and extending until approximately 9:00 pm. Numerous drum lines from across the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex, as well as from outside the area, participate in this event. Judges invited from across the country name winners from within each classification, as well as the overall contest.
