Adapted
physical education is an instructional service provided to students
who are
eligible for special education services and who demonstrate a need for
modified or accommodated physical education
services. Adapted PE is an individualized program of developmental activities,
exercises, games and rhythms and sport
that are aligned with the TEKS. The TEKS are modified or accommodated
to meet the unique physical needs
of the individual with a disability.
A.P.E.
is an active program of physical activity rather than a sedentary alternative
program. The goal of adapted physical
education is similar to the goal of physical education in general; i.e.,
to enhance the movement capabilities of students.
Content of instruction typically includes activities designed to develop
and maintain functional levels of health-related physical fitness, acquire
appropriate motor patterns and skills, and skills in individual and
group games and sports.
A referral
for an evaluation for A.P.E. services can be made during the referral
process or at some time after the student's
eligibility has been established. The referral may be made by a teacher,
by the parent, or by anyone with an educational
interest in the student.
The evaluator is
an adapted physical education teacher who is skilled in procedures for
a functional assessment of the student in the psychomotor domain and
who will, in turn, make a recommendation to the A.R.D. committee regarding
whether regular or specially designed physical education classes will
best fit the student's needs.
