P.E. Activities

baseball holding a glove

Goal: Integrating children with physical disabilities into classes such as physical education can be a real challenge. Here are some suggestions that are simple and require very little preparation.

Materials:
Battery powered tape recorder
Musical cassette tape
Latch timer
Step-by-Step Communicator
Switch

Steps:

1. Plug the switch cable into the Latchtimer input jack.
2. Plug the Latchtimer cable into the switch input jack of an adapted tape recorder.
3. Select the output mode appropriate for the activity. (Timing is recommended for this activity). There are 3 different choices:

  • Direct: The device will remain on for al long as you are touching the Step-by-Step Communicator.
  • Latch: Touch the switch once and the device turns on, touch it again and the device turns off.
  • Timing: Touch the switch and the device turns on for a predetermined amount of time. When time runs out, the device turns off.

4. Place the tape in the recorder and make sure the tape recorder is set to the play position.
5. Decide on the message series for the Step-by-Step Communicator. Here is a suggested series:

  • It’s time for exercises.
  • I will tell you what to do.
  • Start when the music starts.
  • Stop when the music stops.
  • Here we go.
  • Push-ups.
  • Jumping jacks.
  • Run in place.

6. Record Messages: Follow directions on the back of the Step-by-Step Communicator.
7. For the sequence of messages listed above, the child would activate the Step-by-Step Communicator for the first six messages. Following the message ‘Push Ups”, they would press the Switch to activate the tape recorder. The tape recorder will now play in its preset mode. When the tape recorder stops, the child would again activate the Step-by-Step Communicator and then the tape recorder. Continue in this manner until all the exercises have been completed.

Activity Variations:

The Step-by-Step Communicator can be quickly programmed for a variety of activities including:

• Counting: “Here we go, lets do ten, 1, 2, 3,…”
• Starting races “On your marks, get set, go!”
• Stop and go activities
• Giving directions
• Fan to cool off classmates
