Speech in Plano
 
Texas students must successfully complete one semester of speech to fulfill graduation requirements. The speech curriculum in Plano ISD provides opportunities for students to enhance their communication skills through a variety of course offerings:

Communication
Applications
 
This required state-designed speech course is a mandatory communication course for all high school students. The goal is for students to learn effective interpersonal skills, verbal and non-verbal messages, presentation skills, and interview skills in order to be successful in the workplace. Students will give informal presentations and one formal speech. (One semester)
Speech 
Communications 
In this two semester course students  investigate the communication process. They will research, write, and present a variety of speeches. The study of legislative and competitive debate, group discussion, and interpersonal communication will provide further opportunities to develop communication skills. (Grades 10-12)
Intro to Radio 
& Television 
The broadcast media are ever present in our lives. Intro to Radio/TV provides a one semester overview of the TV and radio industries that so profoundly affect our lives. Students will develop skills in media literacy to help them become more knowledgeable media consumers. (Grades 11-12)
Communications 
Major Studies 
This two-year program is available only on the Plano East Senior High School campus where the Plano ISD cable television studio is located. Students get an overview of the communications industry including speech, television, radio, film and broadcast journalism. The research, write, tape, and edit individual video projects, as well as receive hands-on training in the production end of the industry. (Grades 11-12)
Debate I 
Students learn processes of logic and critical thinking as they prepare for competitive debate. They will make debate presentations in classroom and may earn the right to participate as members of their school's debate team. (Grades 9-12)
Oral Interpretation I 
Students in this course  study such principles of oral interpretation of literature as selection and analysis of literature, performance techniques, and criteria for evaluation. They  participate in presentations in the classroom and may earn the right to participate as members of their school's debate team. (Grades 9-12)
Debate II-III
Advanced courses  for students continuing their study of debate. (Grades 10-12)
Oral Interpretation II-III
Advanced courses  for students continuing their study of oral interpretation. (Grades 10-12)
Independent Study 
Speech 
This course allows high-achieving students to do research and produce original work in print or some other medium. Students wishing to enroll in a fourth year of study in Debate or Oral Interpretation  select this course. (Grade 12)
Middle School 
Speech 
Many schools offer a six week introduction to public speaking as part of a year long exploratory "wheel" where students are introduced to a variety of subjects. Students also have their first opportunities to compete in competitive speech tournaments.
6th Grade
Speech 
In this elective course, emphasis is on building self-confidence as a communicator. Students sharpen their listening skills and learn the basics of speech delivery.
7th Grade
Speech 
An elective course where students are introduced to research skills and both verbal and non-verbal communication. Students are trained in media awareness and group communication skills.
8th Grade
Speech
This elective course trains students in intermediate research skills, analysis of information, and critical thinking skills. Students develop current issue awareness and practice advanced delivery skills.
