The Role of the Facilitator
In the Distance Learning Lab

The facilitator is one of the most important elements in the success of the Distance
Learning student. She/he is responsible for monitoring the progress of the students and
for communicating all relevant information to the teacher.

Responsibilities:

• The facilitator is responsible for monitoring the learning of the students at the remote
school site.
• The facilitator works with the students to be sure that they are on task and involved in
the learning process.
• The facilitator should redirect any inappropriate behavior.
• Before the class begins, the facilitator makes sure the equipment is functioning.
• The facilitator notifies the teacher immediately anytime the equipment is not
functioning.
• The facilitator takes attendance at the remote site and advices the teacher of any
absences at the beginning of the period.
• The facilitator monitors students while taking tests and quizzes and maintains security
of test/quiz materials before and after administering them.
• The facilitator collects assignments & tests from the students and forwards them to the
teacher.
• The facilitator will issue books and maintain a record of books issued at the remote
site.
• The facilitator is responsible for getting make-up work to the math department for
students to attend the departmental make-up sessions, and for getting the make-up
work returned to the teacher.

Specifics:
• The facilitator insures that the equipment is plugged into the electrical outlet and into
the network drop and that the monitor power is on.
• The facilitator notifies the teacher immediately if the transmission is not being received
and the teacher will try to reconnect.
• If the school cannot be connected immediately, the teacher will call Instructional
Technology for support.
• For those times when the school cannot be reconnected quickly, both the teacher and
the facilitator will put their phones on speaker phone.
• The facilitator can turn the volume down when the transmission is not coming through,
but the unit should not be unplugged and left unplugged. Unplugging the unit makes it
impossible to reconnect the session.
• The facilitator operates the remote control to adjust the volume level or to mute the
microphone.
