The online "Technology Resource Guide" is designed to help teach students to be responsible technology users. The intent of these web pages is to give examples of proper use to students in grades K-5 at a level they can understand. There are also pictures showing appropriate behavior and use. This outline will serve as a "teacher's guide" to help you explain the guidelines and images throughout the website. There are 3 major sections to this resource: Equipment, Internet, and Responsibilities and Ethical Use. Sections may be used in any order. Use this web site to insure that each student understands the Plano ISD Acceptable Use Guidelines. All guidelines must be presented each year, before students will receive access to the Internet. An optional permission form, to be signed by students and parents, is included.
Signed forms may be kept on campus in a location designated by the principal. After guidelines have been presented, names will given to the Campus Technology Assistant in order to activate Internet access. No one receives Internet access on a district networked computer without a presentation of the Acceptable Use Guidelines.
Section 1:
Equipment: (3 parts)Section 2:
- Treat the equipment with care and respect. Equipment is easily damaged.
- Always get permission before unplugging or plugging anything in to the computer or outlets.
- Keep the computer area neat and always log out when you are finished.
Internet: (5 parts)Section 3
- Use the internet only when given permission by your teacher, don't just browse. (This resource is for educational purposes, not for entertainment.)
- Information found on the Internet, such as: pictures, text, and documents, should only be saved as assigned by the teacher. Saving items to the network and hard drives can take up a lot of space on the network and computer hard drives. Pictures use lots of space, don't download items that you aren't going to use. Don't download items just to have them. Many items are copyrighted. Follow my (the teacher's) instructions as to where they should be saved. It is normally recommended that files are saved to the H: drive.
- Not all information on the Internet is true. Almost anyone can put a picture or information on the Internet. That does not automatically make it trustworthy or accurate information.
- Some Internet pages contain commercials - do not click on commercial links. "Commercial" links are usually pictures and/or information that is designed to sell products and services. There is normally no educational need to use this type of link.
- Never sign-up for special offers or send electronic greetings. It is not appropriate or acceptable to use the school's computers to sign up for special offers or to send electronic greetings or similar. Never give your name or any personal information about yourself to others over the internet. (After demonstrating this page with students, click the browser's "Back" button to return to the "Guidelines" and continue.)
Responsible and Ethical Use: (5 parts)When all three sections are complete, the permission form may be printed and given to students and parents to sign. (Tip: It will probably work best to print out one copy of the form and reproduce it on the copier.) Parents are encouraged to view these guidelines online or request a copy from the office. Several printed copies should always be available in your school's front office.
- Never login as someone else or give someone else your password . It is not appropriate or acceptable to use any login or password except your own.
- Tell your teacher if someone is not following these technology rules. Let your teacher know if the computer is not logged out correctly or if equipment is damaged or any parts are missing.
- All work completed using technology resources must be your own. Don't copy someone else's work. Anything you turn in to your teacher should be your own work.
- Information found on TV, video, and computers may be the property of someone else. Copy this information only with permission. Often we have to get permission to use information, graphics or text that is found on the electronic resources.
- Get permission before adding or deleting files on a computer. Delete files only when instructed by the teacher.
