Introduce the Photostory program (a free download from Microsoft), walk participants through how to create a Photostory and present various ways that the Photostory program can be used in a library and school environment.  Target audience:  PreK-12

 

Survival Skills for the Information Jungle: What All Kids Need to Know About Using the Internet Doug Johnson, Director of Media and Technology, Mankato Public Schools, Minnesota

 

Jungles can be confusing and even dangerous to the inexperienced traveler. The sheer abundance of resources and multitude of paths in them demand the explorer have special skills if they are going to survive and thrive. This presentation describes six Information Jungle Survival Tips for students and suggests how they can be taught.  Target audience:  PreK-12

 

Library Night: Community Connection Sandra Bennett, Stipes Elementary, Irving ISD

 

Opening the school library on special evenings is an effective outreach to the school community. Library Nights can be casual events, yet quite meaningful to students and their families. The session will focus on ways to communicate with parents to get them involved in the Library Nights. We will booktalk some of TAYSHAS' and Lonestar's recent, most popular titles. Relax and enjoy as these ladies whet your appetite with great stories appropriate for 9th through 12th grade students. You will leave motivated and inspired to dive right in to a variety of titles in a variety of genres. Target audience:  Secondary Handout

 

Texas Authors, Ellen Leventhal, author of Don’t Eat the Bluebonnets, is a Houston area author/educator.  Pam Van Scoyoc has two bilingual picture books available: The Ballerina with Webbed Feet/La Bailarina Palipeda and I Could Catch a Whale/Yo Podría Pescar Una Ballena. 

 These books are Sole Source from LLIBS and they will sign and sell the books after this session in the vendor area.

Both authors present at schools and they will be available to autograph their books after the session.  Target audience: Elementary

Noticing an increase in plagiarism?  In work being copied from student to student?  Ever heard a student say, "My teacher said I don't have to cite my sources on this project?"  What's a librarian to do?  Do we have any jurisdiction or responsibility here at all? We'll discuss that question and offer some solutions that other schools have developed.  (Note: This is not a copyright rules session - this is a larger discussion surrounding honesty in the educational environment and creating an atmosphere in which students understand and avoid dishonesty.)  Target audience:  Secondary & Elementary

Based on a track record of building, obtaining and administering excellent library/technology budgets on both a building and district level, the presenter discusses current funding realities facing schools, gives a short primer on school district finance, describes six types of budgets, outlines the three elements of effective budgets, and suggest ways media professionals can increase their influence in the budgeting process. This program will give practical guidance to librarians and teachers wishing to conduct library research with emergent readers, specifically focusing on students in K-2. Instructional strategies, teacher collaboration tips, and integrated curriculum standards will be highlighted. Each project discussed will include a possible student product, as well as modifications and extensions for differentiated instruction.  Target audience:  Elementary

Teaching Storytelling to Your Students Janet Latham, Denton ISD

 

Storytelling improves self-confidence and self-esteem. Storytelling works as a terrific reading motivator and provides students with a reason to improve their writing skills. Storytelling is relevant in all areas of the curriculum as well as encouraging understanding of other cultures and good citizenship skills, such as listening and audience behavior. Kids can tell stories In the class, to another grade level, to the whole school, in a bookstore or nursing home, for a Scout badge, at a local guild meeting. Java Makes Me Jump promotes reading with middle school students in a city-wide collaboration between schools and Barnes & Noble at monthly meetings which are held in the store. This program will be shared so that other middle school libraries can adapt the model to fit their community. Middle school librarians, teachers, and the Barnes & Noble Community Relations Manager partner to provide this program for the students at the eight different Irving middle schools. The program encourages reading a variety of materials. Monthly themes, ideas for publicity, a timeline for planning, and ice breakers will be presented along with bibliographies for further reading. Book talks from students will be shared.  The importance of establishing a community of middle school readers will be discussed as well as the role of the bookstore in helping schools to achieve this goal.   Target audience:  Secondary
