This section will focus on viewing your pictures on a computer's monitor and the basics of file management regarding your digital image files.

Viewing on a Computer

  • Remove the disk from the camera.  It is best to turn camera off before removing, however, it is not necessary as long as it is not "writing" to disk.

  • Place the disk in your computer's floppy disk drive.

  • For a quick full size view of your digital images, using your Internet browser, follow these steps:

1. Open/Start you Internet browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.)

2. Go to the File pull-down menu and select "Open File" or "Open Page".

3.  Select "Choose File".

4.  Browse or "navigate" to your A: drive.

5.  At the bottom of the "Open" window you will see "Files of type".  Click on the black triangle to the right of this location to get a drop-down menu.

6.  Select "All Files" and return to the "Open" window.  The window should now appear similar to this, depending on how many images you have on that disk.

7.  Select ("highlight") the image file you would like to view.  It will be named Mvc-xxxs.jpg or Mvc-xxxf.jpg where "xxx" = the number of the picture on the disk and "s" = standard quality and "f" = fine quality.  Just ignore or delete the .411 files that you see.  They will not be used.

8.  Double-click (or select and click "Open") the file you wish to view.

9.  Your browser should now open the photo for you to view and/or print.  (You may see the screen below first, depending on your browser.  If so, just click "Open" to complete the process.)

Notable Notes......
If you have access to "image" editing software, you will find it easier to view your image files. Some common image editors would include: Adobe PhotoShop and Microsoft Photo Editor
  • Also, this is where you can make changes (edit) your image.  Such as:  changing its size, rotating the image, cropping, enhancing color and clarity, apply a special effect, or convert the file format to ready the image for the use you intend, etc.
  • Most image editing software also provides a way to view all of your image files at one time, in a thumbnail size, making it easier to identify those you wish to see, edit, or print!
  • Every PISD workstation has a basic editing tool called Microsoft Photo Manager and ImageBlender.
  • A more powerful application you can use for this type of work is called Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks
