The Art Program at Gulledge Elementary is founded in the Discipline Based Arts Education (DBAE) philosophy. Students at Gulledge Elementary not only create meaningful works of art, but are involved in discussions of art history as well as art criticism. Each student is encouraged to develop his/her ability to sculpt, paint and draw along with appreciating art for its historical and aesthetic values. Plano Independent School District supports the belief that art is an essential part of children receiving a well rounded education and developing into a contributing member of society.
Pamela Horn received her Bachelor of fine Arts from the University of North Texas. She joined Gulledge in 2003.
The Elementary Music Program enables
students to become proficient in reading, writing, performing, and listening
through a curriculum based on “musical literacy.” PISD incorporates the Kodaly
(pronounced Ko - die ) method for the teaching of music concepts and skills.
Music specialists are certified Kodaly teachers or are in training leading to
certification.
Students are taught to become independent
in singing, hearing, deriving, writing, reading, and creating music. In support
of this work, techniques by Carl Orff are employed through the use of specially
designed instruments. PISD provides a fine arts series for elementary students.
The fine arts series includes performances by the Plano Chamber Orchestra, Kathy
Burks Marionettes, and The Classics - sponsored performing groups.
Merrilyn EderMerrilyn Eder is in her third year as Music Specialist for Gulledge. The Gulledge Physical Education Program provides physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth in terms of each student's needs and interests. It is an integral part of each child's total education. When children feel good about their physical development and have a good self concept, they will perform better in the classroom and in all phases of their lives.
