Literacy Specialist

FLUENCY: WHAT IS IT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

I’m thrilled to begin my first year as a literacy specialist and to start my new adventure at Aldridge, my school home for the past 5 years. This is my eighth year teaching, all in Plano ISD. I taught 4th grade for three years, before moving to 3rd grade as the team leader. I received my undergraduate degree in elementary education from Texas Tech University. In May of 2009, I graduated from the University of North Texas with my master’s in curriculum and instruction, specializing in reading. I’m so lucky to be at Aldridge, working with an amazing group of students, teachers, and parents!

The role of the literacy specialist is a unique one. I’m able to support both students and staff on a daily basis. I provide small group instruction in reading/language arts in collaboration with the classroom teacher. I also encourage and support development and implementation of the instructional goals related to our campus in the area of language arts. I facilitate and implement the dyslexia program for the campus, as well as model lessons for teachers. I’m fortunate enough to work with the grade level teachers in planning language arts, as well as act as a resource for all things literacy.

Guided reading is an important component of our reading program. During guided reading, teachers provide books at the child’s instructional level, guiding students as they develop the strategies of making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, determining importance, and synthesizing during the reading and rereading process.
