Sixth graders at Bowman are placed on of two academic teams:

Gold Stars     Rockin' Blue Raiders

Each team is comprised of students and the teachers for the basic academic classes: social studies, math, science, and language arts.  The students enjoy interactive lessons, field trips, and special team activities planned by their teachers.

TIPS FOR PARENTS

1.  Make sure your child has all the supplies needed for classes:

2 blue or black ink pens
2 pencils
1 red pen
notebook paper
highlighters
map colors

2.  These supplies should be replenished often during the year.

3.  Look for your child's library card in his pencil bag.

4.  Check your child's agenda every day. Ask to see completed or graded assignments and tests.

5.  Check to see that your child's notebook is organized:

dividers in the correct class order,
no loose papers, no spirals or folders,
all papers in the proper section.
6.  Teachers will routinely have students . clean out. individual sections of their binders at the end of a six weeks or at the completion of a unit.
 
7.  Set aside a time and place for your child to study every night.

8.  Supervise studying and limit television, video, computer, and telephone time on school nights.

9.  Encourage your child to attend tutorials when he/she

has missed a day of school
needs to make up a quiz or test
is having difficulty understanding subject matter or concepts.

10.  Help your child manage study time wisely, especially when a project or long-term assignment has been given.

11.  Encourage your child to study for tests.

12.  Review materials with them by asking pertinent questions about subject matter.

13.  Look for progress reports the fourth week of the six weeks and report cards the Friday after the six weeks ends.  Report cards are mailed home at the end of each semester.

  A day in the life of a 6th grader...

Students spend either second or sixth hour in PE, and the other hour in an exploratory class. These classes are divided into six-week sections of Art, Drama, Life Management Skills, Industrial Arts, Spanish, and French.

One of the six class hours is a music class, either band, orchestra, or choir.
The remaining five are academic classes: English, reading, math science, and social studies (world geography).
