Bowman Beginning Band
Our Beginning Band Program consists mainly of sixth graders.
Classes in the Beginning Band Program meet as a regular 45-minute class every day.
Most band classes are grouped so that similar instruments meet together- clarinets meet together,
flutes meet together, trombones meet together, etc.
We have a staff of three band directors, which helps make instruction more individualized.
Fifth Grade Interviews
Prior to their entrance into our program, students meet with a band director in order
to select the instrument that is the best fit for the individual child.
In this interview process, we take into consideration the student's interests, facial and
dental structure, and natural aptitudes.
Instruments We Teach
There are many instrument choices from which sixth graders may select.
Choices include flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion.
These instruments may be rented or purchased locally.
Some students with suitable physical build and musical aptitude may have the opportunity to
select a school-owned instrument: oboe, bassoon, french horn, euphonium (baritone), and tuba.
Most students who join the Bowman Band Program have never played a musical instrument
prior to their experience with us. By December they will be able to perform in an
informal recital. In February and May, we combine all the beginner classes into a band
and perform a concert for the parents. Parents are always amazed by the rate of progress
demonstrated by our beginner band students in these performances.
