Spanish
The Middle School Curriculum for Spanish
is based on communication skills and building a solid foundation for
continued study. Vocabulary, structure, and culture are taught in an
integrated approach using oral communication, reading, and writing. The
Exploratory Program in sixth grade allows the student to experience a
foreign language for 6 weeks. This gives the student the opportunity to
select an elective having experienced the class first. In seventh grade,
the focus is on building vocabulary, learning about culture, basic
structure, and a lot of oral communication. In eighth grade, we again build
vocabulary, but now the structure becomes more sophisticated, and the
culture is more interactive. Oral communication is used no less than 75% of
the time in the classroom. The combined seventh and eighth grade year is
considered equivalent to Level 1 high school Spanish, therefore, students
completing both years successfully in middle school receive one high school
credit. They may then go on to Level 2 in ninth grade. A good experience in
middle school usually leads to a desire to continue to study the language
throughout high school and then in college.
