All sixth grade students are required to take one semester of Exploratory Rotation. The other semester in physical education. The purpose of exploratory is to give students the opportunity to experience the electives offered at Carpenter Middle School. Students will spend three weeks in each exploratory class after which they are given an evaluation grade. A composite grade will be given at the end of the semester for those courses in which the student participated. All work is completed during class time. |

Art |

Students in exploratory art will create a variety of two and three-dimensional artwork as they experiment with various materials such as paper, paint, colored chalk, and clay. The students will learn the elements and principles of design, define art in the environment, explore the cultural and historical aspects of art, and evaluate and critique art works. |

Keyboarding |

Students will practice and master proper keyboarding techniques, such as hand placement/speed and accuracy, through a variety of lessons and activities using the Mavis Beacon keyboarding program. |

Technology Education |

Students will learn the basics of the school network as well as organizing computer files and folders. Various computer applications are explored such as Image Blender where students can alter pictures and create a slide show of their work. |

This class briefly covers topics on peer pressure, how to make wise choices, and getting to know one another. Two weeks will be spent on cross-stitching. Students will learn the basics of sewing, how to thread a needle, how to do backstitches (or outline stitch), how to handle scissors properly, and how to use their time wisely with each type of assignment. Cross-stitching materials are provided. |

Speech/Theater |

This course is designed to enhance a student's intra-personal, communication and problem-solving skills by focusing on a variety of subjects dealing with theater and speech. In Theater, students are guided through a series of creative drama techniques, introduced to pantomime and later improvisation. Finally, students write an original work to be presented on stage. The course ends with improvisations and creative dramatics activities. |
