  Health is a single semester course required for all 8th grade students. Students will develop knowledge and skills to address adolescent health issues. Students gain a better understanding of the knowledge and behavior they use to safeguard their health, particularly pertaining to health risks. Major areas of study will include fitness, nutrition, mental/emotional health, substance abuse, and interpersonal relationships.

* Unit One - Nutrition.
During this unit students study all of the food groups and make a 3-D food pyramid. Students will also compare fat and calories from various fast food restaurants and keep a 3 day food journal students will use to create a spreadsheet.

* Unit Two - Substance Abuse.
Students study different drugs and learn informed decision making with regards to drug resistance

* Unit Three - Injury Prevention.
Methods of avoiding injuries will be discussed.

* Unit Four - Relationships.
In this unit we cover self-esteem, conflict resistance, anger management, and suicide prevention.

* Unit Five - Growing to Maturity.
During this unit we discuss physical and emotional maturation and puberty, male and female anatomy and physiology, abstinence, and students will learn about sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS.
