Update on
"Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day”
Dear
Parent(s):
In the
event your child plans to participate in the “Take Our Daughters
and Sons to Work Day” program on April 22, 2010, we wanted you
to be aware of the position of the Plano Independent School District.
The Plano School Board has reaffirmed its commitment to classroom
attendance and has declined to participate.
The Plano Independent
School District supports and encourages all students in life choices
by providing a wide variety of career education activities throughout
the school year. We encourage teachers and principals to involve parents
and business leaders in their respective activities. Not only are specific
career oriented classes offered, many classes include concepts involving
life skills to promote independence within each student. Speakers, both
male and female, provide insight by speaking to students in all grade
levels. Partnerships between companies and schools provide business
role models, tutors, and mentors for students. Building self-esteem
in students is a priority. We would welcome your involvement or your
company’s involvement in our activities.
The Board and Administration
of Plano ISD are committed to the value of instruction in the classroom
and to the state attendance requirement of 180 days per year. There
are, and will continue to be, numerous requests for students to attend
various functions during class time.
The Texas
Education Agency recommended that school districts in the area coordinate
in developing a common date for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work
Day. Therefore, Wednesday, June 9, 2010, has been chosen as
a common date to be recognized for the school districts within Region
10 to participate in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
Parents
who elect to have their student participate on April 22, 2010, must
notify the school in writing at least one week in advance of the absence.
The student will receive an unexcused absence, but the student
will be allowed to make up class work for full credit. However,
according to Plano ISD Board Policy EIAB (LOCAL), “Students who
do not submit one week in advance a written notice of a planned unexcused
absence shall receive a zero for make-up work.”
If you
have questions, please call Kathy Venslauskas at 469-752-8105, Elaine
Arnold at 469-752-8112 or Kim Loftus at 469-752-8166.

A Pig Contest!

The
Dooley staff is challenging the entire student body to collectively
read at home for ONE MILLION MINUTES! The contest will run until May
28. For minutes to count, they must be read at home, recorded in a student
reading log and signed by parents. If students read for 20 minutes every
night, we can make it there together!

UPDATE:
2009/10 Dismissal Procedure
The Dooley
Staff has updated afterschool dismissal procedures to improve the safety
and security of your child.
Make sure
your student knows their method of getting home for each day: off-campus
walker, PASAR, bus/daycare, or carpool pickup. Any change in transportation
must be made by sending a note to the teacher or calling the school
office by 2:00 PM.
•
PASAR students will be dismissed from their grade level and walked to
the gym.
• Walkers will be dismissed at the side door (facing north to
San Gabriel) and are expected to walk off campus. Students are not allowed
to congregate outside on the hill by the school marquee sign.
• Bus and daycare will be walked to the cafeteria and loaded on
the busses from that area.
NEW
PROCEDURE FOR CARPOOL PICKUP
• Carpool and students who are escorted home by parents will line
up in their designated indoor area near the front entrance. Staff on
outside duty will radio teachers to send a child outside as parents
come through the normal carpool line or walk to the school and gather
in a designated area by the front entrance.
• Kinder and 1st graders sit on the porch for dismissal. Grades
2 through 5 will be in the main hallway waiting to be called.
This is
the same procedure we have used in past years on bad weather days. The
Dooley staff decided to make this our daily carpool dismissal procedure
for the 2009-10 school year to improve the safety and security for our
students.
Please
send comments or suggestions to the Dooley
Webmaster.
