Our philosophy of basketball focuses on an even mixture of athletics
and academics, with emphasis put on teamwork and exemplary student
citizenship both on and off the court. With this in mind,
here are some ground rules for tryouts.
- Tryouts will be held in early November both during and after school. All students will be provided an equal opportunity to showcase their skills and be evaluated by the coaching staff. 8th grade students who do not have 7th period athletics need to report to the gym immediately following school. 7th grade students who do not have 1st period athletics need to report to the gym before school.
- All students need a pair of red (7th) or blue (8th) athletic
shorts, gym shoes, and a white T-shirt with their last name
clearly written on the front and back with permanent marker.
Students will be evaluated using two categories:
- Objectively: The student will be
required to exhibit fundamental basketball skills ranging from
speed, agility, dribbling, shooting, and passing. These
will be measured and recorded using a point system.
- Subjectively: The coaching staff will evaluate
the students in areas such as hustle, academics, teamwork, leadership
and citizenship. These will also be measured in the form
of points.
The total points from both the objective and subjective categories will be totaled and ranked. The top 16 - 20 student/athletes from each grade will make up the Haggard Middle School Basketball Team. |
