First Grade Sight Words

Here is a list of 1st grade sight words.  These are words that all 1st graders should be able to read within a few seconds without sounding out.  Being able to read these words quickly will help us increase our reading fluency.

Please work with your child on recognizing these words quickly and accurately.  One way to do this is by making flashcards of all the words.  Give 5 seconds for each word.  If your child says the word correctly within the 5 seconds, they get to keep the card.  If they don't know the word or they read it incorrectly, the card stays in the pile.  They may graph the words correctly on the Words I Know Graph available for download here.  Words that they were unable to read are words they can work on each night.

Another fun way to work on these words is to play Old Maid.  Place all the cards face down spread out on the table or the floor.  Pick one word that will be the Old Maid word.  Take turns turning over cards and reading the words in 5 seconds or less.  If they read the word correctly they get to keep the word.  If they get the Old Maid word, they lose a turn.  The kids have played this in class  and really enjoy it.

If you have any questions or other fun ways to learn these words, please feel free to let us know.
