Welcome to the first grade. This a year of great learning! Our
curriculum consists of the following components:
Reading, Writing, Letters and Sound Knowledge, Spelling, Math, Science,
and Social Studies. There are a lot of new skills introduced and
mastered in First Grade, so you will see a lot of growth
throughout the year. Our curriculum is student -centered,
and there is a great deal of hands-on learning. We provide daily
reading homework as well as a weekly Spelling List.
Thank you,

What
are some things we do in the First Grade? We have many exciting
things going on throughout the year that we are sure you will enjoy.
In addition to our well-rounded curriculum, we have many special
events. Here is some information about each one. Be sure to
click on the picture to see pictures of each event.
APPLE DAY with DAD - September
First Graders invite their dads or other adult to share in a day of
learning centered around apples. The kids really enjoy having
this special time.
PIONEER DAY - November
This is a great experience provided in our Integrated Curriculum.
Students use good production systems that pioneers may have used.
They learn that families in the past needed systems just as modern day
families need systems. Our students will go through four stations:
butter making, making Indian Bead Necklaces, old time games, and quilt
making. It is a very memorable day for our students. It
takes place during the day as a part of our regular school day
curriculum. We also have our First Graders dress up like pioneer
children.
POLAR EXPRESS DAY - December
The First Grade Teachers read The Polar Express and have the children
wear their pajamas to school. The teachers also wear their
pajamas. We get to drink sugar free hot chocolate, and the kids
can bring a special stuffed animal to share the day with them. We
have some reading and writing activities that go along with the book as
well. It's a fun-filled day!
100s DAY
The teachers have planned a day centered around the 100th day of
school. First Graders are asked to dress as if they were 100
years old. This has always been great fun!
First
Grade Program
The name of our program is, "A Day in the Life of a First Grader". This
is a special program written by our music teacher, Mrs. Arbolino.
Your child will take you through their day through a selection of
songs. First Graders wear a Hedgcoxe spirit shirt the night of
the program. This is a very memorable event. It is also one
of Ms. Graham's (principal) favorite Hedgcoxe events. We love it!
