Library

The Library Media Center is open daily from 7:30-3:00. Students visit the library with their Language Arts class weekly for lessons and selection of books. Library skills and story time are designed to support classroom objectives. Students may come in at other times with their teacher’s permission, and before and after school. Our mission is to help students become independent library users who love to read.

The Hedgcoxe Library Media Center provides materials to coordinate with the curriculum and for pleasure reading. Students  in Kindergarten and first grade check out one book per week. Grades 2-5 check out two books. Books are checked out for one week and may be renewed if student needs longer to complete the book. Special consideration is always given for checking out more books when students are working on projects. If students finish their books before their next library time, The Hedgcoxe Library Media Center provides materials to coordinate with the curriculum and for pleasure reading. Students they are welcome to return to the library and check out another book. Students with overdue books may not check out additional items until their overdue materials are returned. If the book has been overdue for several weeks, we ask the child to look carefully for the book at home and in their classroom area before paying for the book. If a lost item is later found during the current school year, the student will receive a refund.

Using library computers, students can search for books to read for recreation as well as researching a topic using a variety of on-line resources. These research materials can also be accessed from home.

Parent volunteers are a valuable asset to the Library. They assist the students and staff with selection and check out of materials. If interested in helping with library activities please contact Mrs. Cooper.

Bluebonnet
The Texas Bluebonnet Award is designed to encourage students in grades 3-5 to explore a variety of current books and to identify their favorite book through the voting process.

Each year a list of 20 books are designated as Bluebonnet books and are read if students choose to participate in the Bluebonnet Reading Program. For each book a student reads, they fill out a form and visit with Mrs. Cooper about their favorite part of the book.

After reading five books from the list the student will qualify to vote for their favorite book the last week of January. Votes are sent to Austin to be calculated with votes from across the state. The book with the most votes is declared the Bluebonnet winner for the year.

Students who read 10 or more of the Bluebonnet nominees, will be invited to a Bluebonnet Breakfast given in February. If a student completes all books from the list, they will receive a $5.00 gift certificate to use at our PTA Book Fair held in May.
