Kindergarten - First Grade - Second Grade

Fourth Grade - Fifth Grade

Plano ISD students in grades Kindergarten, First, Second, and Fourth attend a field trip to the Holifield Science Learning Center as part of their Integrated Curriculum studies. Fifth graders who do not attend Outdoor School at Collin County Adventure Camp have an opportunity to visit the HSLC for a fun day of learning that includes some of the lessons and hands-on labs taught at camp. Secondary science classes have the opportunity to utilize the facilities dependant upon staff availability.

KINDERGARTEN

OI: WHAT'S ALIKE? / WHAT'S DIFFERENT?

Kindergarten students will go on a nature walk through the woods to categorize living and nonliving objects and to discover the diversity of plants and animal homes. Students will visit the Living Materials Center to observe and compare how animals are alike and different.

FIRST GRADE

OI: WHY CLASSIFY?

First grade students will be led on a trail walk to classify plants according to the way they are used, the parts humans and animals eat, characteristics, and their by-products. While touring the Living Materials Center, students will identify and classify animals by how they move, what they eat, and what they wear.

SECOND GRADE

OI: WHAT DOES EVIDENCE TELL US ABOUT OUR WORLD?

Second grade students will explore the woods searching for evidence that humans, animals, insects, time, and weather have made an impact or change on the environment. Students will practice the steps in "Mr. E. Solver's Plan" to solve riddles about some of the animals found in the Living Materials Center.

FOURTH GRADE

OI: MANY FACES , MANY PLACES

Fourth grade students will explore the relationships between plants, animals, and humans in the Blackland Prairie while role-playing as the first pioneer scientists to visit this region of Texas. Students will go hunting for 70 million year old fossils and participate in a rock and mineral lab. While visiting the Living Materials Center students will be introduced to animals native to the Blackland Prairie and discover the various food chains that exist within it.

FIFTH GRADE (Non-camp)

OI: HOW THE PARTS INTERACT TO MAKE A WHOLE

Fifth grade students not attending a session of outdoor school at Collin County Adventure Camp will have an opportunity to spend a day at the Holifield Science Learning Center. Students will explore the interactions between living and non-living factors while walking through a deciduous forest and a grassland. Students will practice the scientific method and utilize scientific tools as they participate in a dendrology lab and a water quality lab. Students will also learn about venomous snakes and tour the Living Materials Center.
